The historic Colombian port city of Cartagena is the tourism jewel of its stretch of Caribbean coast; a museum of a town that has barely changed since colonial times. Founded in 1533, and walled-off in the 1700s to protect it from pirates, there are a number of ways to explore downtown, whether on your own or with a guide. Start from the Puerta del Reloj clock portal on Carriages Square that leads on to Bolivar's Square and then go see the 1575-built Cartagena Cathedral, partially demolished by Sir Francis Drake's cannons.

Don't miss the stunning Santo Domingo Church on Calle Santo Domingo, the oldest church in the city. As beautiful as the architecture is, the sultry atmosphere on the streets, the friendly people, bustling cafe life, and traditional music coming out from every balcony and doorway adds to the charm. Hotel-wise, book yourself into the Saint Theresa Cloister that's set on its own private square.
