The historic Colombian port city of Cartagena is the tourism jewel of its stretch of Caribbean coast; a museum of a town that has barely changed since colonial times. Founded in 1533, and walled-off in the 1700s to protect it from pirates, there are a number of ways to explore downtown, whether on your own or with a guide. Start from the Puerta del Reloj clock portal on Carriages Square that leads on to Bolivar's Square and then go see the 1575-built Cartagena Cathedral, partially demolished by Sir Francis Drake's cannons. |
